What comes with text copied from Google Docs?
Copying from Google Docs gives the destination two things: styled HTML, and text that already contains curly quotes and dashes. The first is removed by pasting as plain text. The second is not, because those are real characters.

Three sources of junk to know about
- Inline styles and wrapper markup. Rich-text editors such as a CMS or email composer keep HTML from the clipboard. Pasting as plain text stops that.
- Smart substitutions. Under Tools, Preferences, Substitutions, Google Docs can replace straight quotes with curly ones and other patterns as you type. See normalizing quotes and dashes for the characters involved.
- The byte order mark in .txt downloads. A leading U+FEFF is an invisible character that can break the first field of a CSV or the first key of a JSON file. The JSON BOM guide shows the symptom and the fix.
How to clean text copied from Google Docs
- Copy in Google Docs and paste into the cleaner above.
- Use the Safe Clean preset to convert curly quotes, dashes and the ellipsis to plain characters, or Keep Typography to keep them and only fix spaces and hidden characters.
- Read the "What changed" report to confirm what was replaced, then copy the result.
